Hi
“How did you develop your interest in microrayons?” is a question I hear often yet still don’t have an answer for. Growing up in a former model kolkhoz and later moving abroad made me realise how unusual our built environment is and my architecture studies gave me the context and the space to question and explore our urban environment. While writing my master’s thesis on the future of microrayons my fascination only grew and now living in Riga again I get to contribute to the ongoing conversation about the future of Soviet architecture and its place in post-soviet states not only through research but also through my social media project focusing on the everyday life in Riga's microrayons - micromacrorayon.
Micromacrorayon is a passion project that grew from gathering microrayon pictures for my master's thesis to a platform that explores and archives the built heritage we often ignore. I believe that in order to make a better future, understanding the history and the ways architecture and urban planning shape our society is essential, that’s why I aim to make this information easily accessible for the residents and provide a different perspective on microrayons.
